Overview
I hadn’t been dating my boyfriend for very long before he surprised me with a trip to San Francisco for Valentine’s Day. I had never been, but had always wanted to go, so I was very excited. We were only able to go for a long weekend (it also happened to coincide with Presidents’ Day, so we had a 3-day weekend already), but we tried to make the most of it while there.

We decided on our last night in San Francisco to splurge on some delicious seafood. After a bit of research, we picked the place we wanted to go and decided to head to Fisherman’s Wharf. It was raining pretty badly, so we darted out the front door of the hotel to a cable car stop right in front. We checked the time and figured we’d only have to wait a few more minutes before it came.
While waiting, I spotted a limo coming down the street, heading our direction. I jokingly said to my boyfriend, “hey, our limo’s finally arrived!” We had a good laugh… and then the limo pulled over. The driver rolled down the window and asked where we were headed. We told him and he said, “hop in, I can take you for $10. I’m already on the clock.” So, we got in the limo! (In the three years since this happened, I’ve watched copious amounts of crime shows and realize that this was perhaps not the safest decision I’ve made in my adult life, but hey, I’m alive and writing this now, right?)
The driver was Luigi, a transplant from Palermo. He was, perhaps, the raunchiest guy I’ve ever come in contact with. Since it was Valentine’s Day, I suppose he felt it appropriate to talk to us about all the things couples do on Valentine’s night, you know, after the champagne and chocolates. I won’t go into details, but suffice it to say, I have the mind of a teenage boy and even I turned a particular shade of red.
I suppose at some point I must’ve mentioned to him that I’d studied abroad in Rome and that I spoke some Italian, because he took to speaking to me in Italian and demanding that I translate it.
We made it to Scoma’s just fine, too. (And thankfully so, because the food was incredible.)
In the end, Luigi was an alright guy. Plus, it made for an interesting story, right?
Nice post! Heading to SF next month so this is very timely. Great tips…I’m looking forward to discovering this Californian gem!
