Foodie Friday: The Old Coupland Inn Barbeque

About 40 minutes northwest of Austin, there’s a small podunk town of about 1200 without much more than a post office, a few shops, and The Old Coupland Inn and Dancehall.

My parents lived in Austin for a few years in the 1980s (when I was born and for a couple years after) and frequented this spot for barbecue. Now, almost 30 years after they moved away, they still talk about how good the food is there.

When my youngest sister came into town last year, I decided it was finally time for us to check it out. We took a little family trip (the two of us with some friends) to try the barbecue that we’d heard so much about.

I’m not a fan of ribs or brisket (I know–blasphemy!), so I tried their chicken and sausage, which they not only cook, but make on premise. They serve it up with a side of onions, pickles, texas toast, beans, coleslaw, and potato salad.

It’s a ton of food, but it’s beyond delicious. My sister and I, as per usual, finished off all our sides first and didn’t leave much room for the meat–thankfully the guys we were with helped us out in our plight.

If you’re ever in the Austin area, Coupland Inn is worth the 40-minute drive, if not only for the food, then for the ambiance of a place that’s been around for over 100 years, in a town that’s literally just about one street.
