Foodie Friday: Black Pudding

There are lots of things that really gross me out. Especially food-wise. And black pudding is one of those foods. When I first learned that it was a sausage made of blood mixed with some kind of filler, it was enough to make me gag. Even now, as I write that, I kind of want to throw up a little, knowing that I ate it.

I was in Fort William, Scotland visiting with the amazing Pete and Dalene of Hecktic Travels and Pete, being the adventurous eater that he is, ordered black pudding. I was feeling a bit impulsive and when he offered me a bite, I figured, why not? (Thanks to Dalene for capturing the magic.)

I expected it to have a metallic blood-like taste, but was surprised that it didn’t. In fact, it wasn’t half bad.. and almost kind of good. It was crispy and had more of a sausage-type flavor, I thought. It’s not a food I’d probably ever try again because I can’t really wrap my head around it and if I think about what it is, I’ll never be able to force it down again, but I was surprised (and even kind of disgusted with myself) to not hate it.

  • hehe In Newfoundland we just call it what it is: blood pudding. Growing up I used to eat it with breakfast somewhat frequently and liked it’s salty, sausagey taste. I thought the name was just a nickname, not an ingredient list. When I realized what it was actually made from I stopped eating it for ages. But I came back to it and ate it almost every morning when I was in Ireland in 2011.

But then, I’m the girl who tried congealed ox blood in a soup in Korea and didn’t gag (though I’m not rushing to have it again).

    • I’m with you there, Kate! I almost always have a mind-over-matter thing, but for some reason, this time I didn’t really care. I decided just to go for it and give it a try!
