Foodie Friday: Kolaches

czech stop kolaches

So, what exactly is a kolache? Technically, it’s a type of pastry with a fruity filling. But in Texas, we also like to fill them with sausages, cheese, jalapeños, and more.

Originally from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, kolaches are a delicious treat that it seems most people (at least in Texas) have for breakfast.

On my road trip from Austin to Pennsylvania, I stopped at one of the most famous kolache places in Texas–The Czech Stop in West, Texas. Since it was my first go-round with kolaches, I decided to try three different kinds (though, I’m not a totally fatty–I didn’t eat them all at once): lemon, mixed berry, and a hot chubbie with cheese (it sounds really gross, but it’s just spicy sausage and cheese).

I actually didn’t really care for the hot chubbie (seriously, I feel so dirty even typing it), but I’m also not much of a meat-for-breakfast kinda gal. The mixed berry was pretty delicious, but that lemon, oh that lemon, I could’ve eaten every single day. But, I also love lemon-flavored everything.

When I was in Czech Republic, I didn’t see kolaches anywhere, but I also wasn’t looking. Next time I’m there, I’ll definitely be seeking these babies out to see if The Czech Stop is offering up authentic goods.
