Five Romantic Places You Shouldn’t Visit When You’re Single (And Bitter About It)

Let’s face it—sometimes being single can be a totally awesome thing. Like those times when you don’t feel like showering for two days or leaving your couch because you’re glued to a crappy crime show marathon on TV. Or, you know, like when you decide you want to quit your job, put everything you own in storage, and leave your “real” life behind for a while.

But then, after a few weeks of being totally alone, you realize that sometimes being single sucks a little bit. Especially when you’re in those horribly romantic places where everyone around you seems to be in those first few weeks of puppy love and they’re sucking face and you’re thinking, “Jesus, now I just want to go home and listen to James Blunt” (who my local radio DJs dubbed, “the music you want to slit your wrists to”).

So, if you’re single and don’t want to be constantly barraged by those gross couples who are madly in love and want to show it to the world, don’t visit any of the following places. And, on the other hand, if you are one-half of those gross couples who are madly in love, maybe you should go to all these places.

Dream Destination: A Paris Do-Over

The Louvre at Night

This time last year I went to Paris for the first time. I’d dreamed about going to Paris for years–I imagined what it would look like, what it would sound like, how I’d practice my French, and wear Parisian-inspired dresses while traipsing around the arrondissements in search of the picture-perfect cafes.

Paris is incredibly photogenic. I had such a great time taking photos and trying to find the perfect angles and shots to sum up my trip. Hope you enjoy!

View of Paris from Palais Garnier Opera House

Where I Stayed: Les Jardins du Marais, situated in the 11th arr., just next to the 3rd

Arrondissement: 18; Montmatre

Restaurant: Chez Clément

Museum: Musée d’Orsay, but to be perfectly honest, it’s the only major museum I had time to visit.

Church: Notre Dame de Paris

Historical Site: Palais Garnier, its opulence is unparalleled

Experience: The walk through Jardin des Tuileries to the Louvre at night. There’s a little carnival area set up close by and there were children in these big plastic bubbles in a pool of water, running around like hamsters in wheels, banging into one another until they fell down in their respective bubbles, giggling and scrambling to get up quickly and go again.

Food(s): Ladurée macarons (these are certainly worth their cost and are almost too beautiful to eat!)

What’s In My Bag: London & Paris

I’ve been in full-on packing mode for about two weeks: purchasing last-minute items (rain shoes, extra camera battery, etc.), writing lists, checking off lists, getting things organized.. it’s never-ending.

I have already shared my Travel Essentials Packing Checklist, but now I’m going to share photos of what I typically pack for longer international trips (and how I make it all fit). Keep in mind: I bring along a lot more than backpackers, so if you’re looking for packing minimalists, you’ve come to the wrong place.

What to Listen to: Paris

My short trip to Paris is just around the corner, so here’s just a bit of what I’ve been listening to in order to get (even more) excited about it!

Dream Destination: Paris

Dreaming of Paris: the architecture, boulangeries, museums, sites, accordions, striped clothing, and the beautiful language. I’ve been wanting to go for years, but haven’t found the right time. Perhaps this summer as a stopover on my way to the London Olympics. But for now, a few gorgeous photos to help the daydreaming..
