What to Wear in London

I leave for my big trip to London exactly three weeks from today! I can’t even begin to explain how excited I am, not only to go to London for my third (and longest) trip, but also to escape the miserable Texas heat for two and a half weeks. I have my whole trip planned out in TripIt.com, and one of the things I love about it is that it gives me the temperatures to look forward to while I’m there. So, while it’ll be a balmy and disgustingly sweaty 95-100 degrees here in Austin, it’ll be a cool 75 degrees in London. (To be honest, I sometimes forget what anything below 85 degrees feels like, so it makes packing difficult.)

I’m already thinking about what to pack, however, and so I thought I’d mock up a few outfits that I intend to pack and wear to different occasions in London.

What to Wear in London during the Summer

Just an every-day-walk-about-town outfit. Something comfortable, but still a bit stylish. I recall the first time I went to London, I felt like such a tourist walking around in some loose-fitting jeans, beat-up sneakers, and an over-sized jacket (it was November). Londoners are pretty fashionable people, and I hate to stick out like a sore thumb, so now I try to find something that’s both comfortable for all-day wear and walking, and also stylish enough that I won’t feel uncomfortable if I duck into Harrods. Throw in a light-weight jacket or sweater, and you’re good to go!

What to Wear to the West End Theatre District in London

I have tickets to see Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night, which was my absolute favorite play in college.. and I’ve never seen it! In any case, I’m seeing it on a Monday night, and I have decent seats (though, unfortunately, not the best!), but I realize that London isn’t quite as dressy as it once was with regards to theater, so I’m opting for something middle-of-the-road. (I hate to be overdressed about as much as I hate to be underdressed!)

  • Cute outfits, and cute shoes! I was far from being fashionable when I went to London. Actually, I’m far from being fashionable. Period.

    • Thanks! I used to be the same, but sometime within the past few years I finally started to “get” fashion and really enjoy it! Just another creative outlet, I suppose. :)

    • Hi Veronica, actually this entire post was for outfits to wear in the summer. :) Even though it’s summer, it can still be kind of chilly there, so be sure to pack pants and sweaters in additional to your summertime favorites, just in case the weather takes a turn for the worst. Also, always be sure to have some sort of rain gear along–umbrella, jacket with a hood, wellies, rain shoes–whichever works for you.
