I had so much fun at the Preakness this past weekend! Who knew horse races could be so awesome?

Our tickets were for the Turfside Terrace. Turfside really does mean turfside–we were so close to the horses! Our table was at the very front of the tent, about 10 feet from a picket fence, and about 20 feet from where the horses were running. The weather was absolute perfection both days (for the Black-Eyed Susan and the Preakness), the food was amazing, the people we sat with were great, and I ended up winning about $100. (Oh, did I forget to mention that I actually took the time to learn how to handicap and found that it was really interesting?)

It was really amazing to see I’ll Have Another win the second race of the Triple Crown. We secured our spot right up against the white picket fence to watch the race. Stood there in the glaring sun for over an hour in anticipation for the race. A race that was over in just a matter of minutes. But the excitement around us was palpable, and really awesome to be a part of. Everyone screaming and cheering, and then almost silent, waiting for the official winners to be posted. It was so close, and from where we were standing, it was tough to see exactly who crossed that finish line first.

Fingers crossed that I’ll Have Another wins the Belmont. There hasn’t been a Triple Crown winner since 1978, and I’d love to say that I saw the Triple Crown winner run!

We stayed in the Inner Harbor. I grew up only about 45 minutes from Baltimore, and spent a lot of my teen years there. While the Inner Harbor felt very similar to when I spent time there 10 years ago, it seemed so much cleaner and safer than before. I could actually imagine myself living in Baltimore after this trip there (all I could remember prior to this trip about Baltimore were the grungy times I spent there before, and haunting scenes from The Wire). And at night, it was so beautiful.
