Photos: Bruges

As cliché as it may be, after seeing In Bruges, I knew I needed to visit this historic city. While watching the movie, I found myself totally drawn to the backdrop and already scheming ways in which I could go. On my most recent visit to the Netherlands, I convinced my lovely friend, Beata, to take me there on a day trip. I’d been to Belgium earlier on that trip with Beata when just the two of us went to Antwerp and tasted all the finer things the country had to offer. This time, we were accompanied by our friend Swedish friend, Josefine (whom we’d met when we studied in Rome several years back), and Beata’s then-boyfriend.

It didn’t take long before I was enamored by its charm. It was a cold and relatively overcast day, but it was totally worth it to explore the city on foot, even if it meant getting caught in a bit of rain.

The architecture and layout were reminiscent of the Netherlands, which makes sense–you know, neighbors and all. I really loved the Markt Square, which was especially charming lit up at dusk/night.

While wandering along canals, we saw a chocolate shop that was demonstrating how they made their confections. It was fascinating to watch how quickly and efficiently they managed to create things that looked so delicate and intricate.

We also met some interesting frat boys in white suits and yellow thong underwear who offered to cheer for us loudly in exchange for a few euros.

All in all, I had a great time taking in the sites, sounds, and tastes of Bruges. I can’t wait to go back.
