University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning is not only the focal point of the campus and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, but it’s also something even cooler–it’s the real-life version of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!
I spent a bit of time there in September roaming around the Commons Room hoping to see some of the Harry Potter cast. (Especially Neville Longbottom because there are lots of dark corners for doing dark deeds–seriously, look at him.)
Sadly, I didn’t get to meet any of the cast, I didn’t see any owls flying around, and I didn’t get to test out any of the spells I know, but I was at least able to snap a few shots and feel very envious of my sister who got to spend four whole years not only studying at Hogwarts, but also working there.
If you’re a huge Harry Potter nerd, I suggest a visit. There’s not much else to see in the building, but the Gothic architecture is stunning and throws you into another world completely. It seems like an awesome space in which to do some studying too, and I would love to just sit in there for hours reading and falling into a fantasy world.
Ah, beautiful photos! I went to the University of Pittsburgh, and this was a lovely trip down memory lane. Spent many, many, MANY hours studying in there. The most “Harry Potter” thing that ever happened was during December finals week. The fireplaces were lit up, and the common area full of students. In swooped cloaked members of Pitt’s secret society to distribute candy and treats to weary students. It definitely felt magical!
Thanks, Amanda! And that does sound magical! Wish I’d gotten to see that! :)
Neville Longbottom aged well, didn’t he? He looks hot now.

Haha, he sure did. And yeah, he definitely is!
Lovely! I also studied at the University of Pittsburgh and loved that common room. Though it did get tough to find a study table at times… and no one magically gave me candy or send owls flying through the room…
Though they do bring dogs in for everyone to pet twice a week! That’s kind of magical.
Haha, it’s too bad they didn’t send in owls. But hey, dogs twice a week would certainly make me more excited about studying!
